Lessons from your favorite GOT characters- Cersei Lannister

Categories Lifestyle, Spotlight

Cersei Lannister is one of the characters from GoT we all love to hate. A member of House Lannister, she is the main antagonist. Her family is one of the wealthiest and most powerful families in Westeros. When the series begins, she is introduced as the wife of King Robert Baratheon. This character develops to become one of the most horrible and ruthless characters in the series. Finding positive attributes from Cersei was a bit challenging but here we go…

1. Always reach for your dreams
From a young age, Cersei knew that she wanted to be a powerful woman. She might not have thought as far as becoming queen herself. She wished to get married to Rhaegar Targaryen. When this doesn’t happen, her father arranged her marriage to Robert who becomes King after the Targaryen’s lose the war. When Ned stark threatens her position, she is quick to remind him that there is no middle ground when it comes to seating on the throne.
“When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground.”

2. When life gives you lemons make lemonade
Cersei has a way of adapting to the situations, accept what can’t be changed and make the best of it. When Aerys Targaryen rejected the proposal for Cersei to marry his son, she refused all proposal until she finally agreed to marry Robert Baratheon making her the queen. When she loses all her children, the only thing that keeps her going is her dream of becoming the ruler of Westeros.

3. Know your value
When Cersei feels that Margaery Tyrel intends to grab power as queen, she tries to alienate Margaery from Joffrey. This effect is unsuccessful, leading to the marriage of Margaery to Joffrey. The marriage doesn’t go through since Joffrey is poisoned by Margaery’s grandmother, Olenna Tyrell.
Cersei knows what power she commends and easily puts Littlefinger in his place when he tries to cross a line.
“Seize him. Cut his throat. Wait! I’ve changed my mind. Let him go. Power is power!”

4. Tomorrow is always brighter
“A sinner comes before you, Cersei of House Lannister. Mother to His Grace, King Tommen, widow of His Grace, King Robert. She has committed the acts of falsehood and fornication. She has confessed her sins and begged for forgiveness. To demonstrate her repentance, she will cast aside all pride, all artifice, and present herself as the gods made her… to you, the good people of this city. She comes before you with a solemn heart, shorn of secrets, naked before the eyes of gods and men, to make her walk of atonement.”

Once her post-marital affairs and involvement in Robert’s death come to light. Cersei is punished with a walk of shame. She is forced to strip and walk naked through the streets of Kings landing as the people jeer at her while throwing rotten fruits and vegetables at her. At this point she is vulnerable, shamed, despondent but not defeated. She knows what she has to do once all this is done- make them pay.

5. Family first
Family comes first for Cersei. Many have said that the only thing that keeps her grounded is her love for her children. She is ready to move mountains for her kids at the cost of everything. When she learns that Ned stark intends to tell Robert that the children are not the true heirs of the thrown, she ensures that Robert is attacked by a boar on a hunting trip. She works quickly to ordain Joffrey as the king and her as queen regent and chief political advisor.
“The more people you love, the weaker you are. You’ll do things for them that you know you shouldn’t do. You’ll act the fool to make them happy, to keep them safe. Love no one but your children.”
